Crisis averted11/16/2008
Yesterday I called several stores and went to Babies R' Us and Target in search of a replacement blankey. The problem being that my friend Emily had made the blanket a year ago when Clara was born, similar in style to the Taggies blankets. Apparently not too many places sell them. I bought a similar color and textured blanket at BBRUs but Clara wasn't having any of it, so at 5.37pm she and I made a trip to Hancock fabrics and Wendy's. I put her in her highchair with her dinner in front of the Praise Baby DVD so I could pull out the sewing machine. I managed to make a replacement blanket before she went to bed. It's far from perfect because I didn't measure or pin... and I didn't thoughtfully pick out the ribbon like Emily did... I just made sure it was close enough in color that Clara would like it...

It worked.
To top off my lovely day...11/15/2008
I lost Clara's blankey.

To start my day? I woke up with my eye glued shut. Went to the HEB clinic where I was told I have pink eye and I need to stay away from people for the next 24 hours. Then I went to the pharmacy.

Clara's blankey is either at the HEB clinic, the HEB parking lot, or somewhere near the CVS.

Crap.
Painting Pottery11/14/2008
So I love painting pottery. Last time Chalice and I went I decided to paint little serving bowls to match my dishes. It was a very boring project and I won't do it again, but I am pleased with how they turned out... I did my best to match our actual dishes...

And the photo is cropped weird because I'm too lazy to clear off the counter to take a real picture.

Updated Running Goals11/13/2008
So I'm Stepping Out to Fight Diabetes in a little over a week, so I figured it was time to revisit my running goals. It's been about four months since I started running (Chris is in shock - he thought I would quit after one week!) and I've met my original goals plus some...

My original goals:
1 - Learn to run
2 - Lose ten pounds (I stopped eating so many sweets until halloween candy came out for this one)
3 - Get in a routine of getting exercise.

I've met all three. I learned to run (duh). I lost 10 pounds (woohoo!) - I'm actually in a size 6 which I haven't worn in probably 4 years? And I definitely have a routine of getting exercise - I go at least three times a week, although some days I don't run the whole way, I still get three times more exercise that I was getting before. Except that math doesn't make sense, but you get what I'm saying.

So my new goals for the next four months:
1 - Run three miles at least twice a week.
2 - Lose five more pounds (I'm waiting until after the holidays to start that - I'm not NOT going to eat fudge and English toffee.)
3 - Stay in a routine of getting exercise.

Long term goals?
1 - Three of my grandparents had heart attacks, so it would seem that some sort of heart disease runs in my family. I hope to reduce that risk by being "fit"
2 - Set a good example for Clara of being active.
3 - I think all of you know that I am on medication for depression and anxiety. When I started running I was able to cut my medication in HALF because of the benefit of getting that much exercise. I hope to keep it that way, and maybe over time be able to cut it in half again. My plan is to NEVER have a depressive episode again in my life, and I'm thinking that running can help that happen.
Getting ready for winter11/12/2008
I couldn't resist these winter knee highs at my favorite store on the planet yesterday. I'm wearing them even though it's 75 degrees outside. This way I can secretly get ready for Christmas, but noone will REALLY know! That is, unless you come over for tea or coffee or hot chocolate or some other hot beverage - the Christmas mugs are coming out today.
New phrase11/11/2008
Clara said a new phrase this morning... "i duh"... which translates to "I'm stuck". Because she keeps getting her leg stuck between the slats in her crib and we have to use Pam to get her free.

Also this morning I watched her learning to climb out of her crib. After I freed her from the slats, she stood up and flung one leg over the top of the crib rail. I guess it's about time to graduate her to a big girl bed.
Feeding squirrels11/11/2008
Clara's favorite animal right now is the squirrel and she has learned to call them by clucking with her tongue. She does it all the time as we walk around the neighborhood. The thing is, they only respond at Chris' parents house.

The squirrels at Chris' mom and dad's have trained them to feed them pecans by hand and Clara LOVES it. I put more pictures in the album, but these are my favorites... Oh, and Clara has learned to say "cheese" when I point the camera at her - and you can tell that's exactly what she's saying!

Praying for our children11/10/2008
The author of "Bring the Rain" came up with a list of seven prayers to offer for your children throughout the day that she adapted from different verses. I think I'm going to print them out and put them around the house in the appropriate places and begin to pray them for Clara. I'm thinking of switching out the bedtime one with the MYF benediction though.

May the Lord bless you and keep you,
may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His peace.
-Psalm 67

Tidbits...11/10/2008
This week I narrowly missed cutting off the tip of my finger while chopping onion. Fortunately the way the knife (onion?) slipped, I only sliced off a thin layer of skin - it didn't even bleed!

I also rammed a sewing needle into my thumb. I had to pull it out with my teeth. Reminded me of the time my mom and I were at my Grama's and I stepped on a sewing needle that went straight into my heel and my mom had to remove it with pliers. I took this as a sign that I'm not supposed to cross-stitch Clara's stocking this year.

Yesterday at the grocery store I knocked over an entire display of Reynold's Oven Ready bags.

We have a rodent problem at work. Friday they found a rat about 10 feet from my desk. Not a mouse. A RAT!
Tagged By Robin - Random Things11/6/2008
My friend Robin tagged me for this post. I'm supposed to list seven random things not everybody knows about me...

  1. To copy one of Robin's, I am legally blind. I cannot read my alarm clock unless my face is three inches from it. I have to put my glasses in the same place every morning or every night or I have to have Chris look for them, or walk around the house with my face inches from every surface hoping that I find them. I got my first pair of glasses when I was six. I got contacts when I was 14, which are what I wear unless I'm getting out of bed, in bed or sleeping.
  2. I wore a retainer for a year before getting braces. Then I got braces, head gear and rubber bands. Then I wore a retainer full time another two years and wore it at night until I was 25.
  3. I can never be president - I was born in Canada. Now if they decide to change the rules for Ahnold...
  4. Candy corn is my weakness - I only allow myself to buy it in October.
  5. I changed my major five times in college and still managed to graduate in three years
  6. My favorite tv show is "The Girls Next Door". (I'm not sad that Holly and Puffin split up though)
  7. I love airplanes, but I hate flying.

oh yeah, funny story...11/5/2008
After my run, I grabbed a shower (I didn't know I could sweat as much as I do). I'd forgotten that there are guys in our yard rebuilding our fence, so I came back out to the computer with a towel wrapped around me and one on my head. Did a couple things, heard some noise, turned around and there was a man at my kitchen window...

I'm hoping he didn't see me.
against the wind...11/5/2008
Today I feel whiney and gripey and like complaining. I'm not sure why, I just feel like it. Maybe it's because it's nearly five, and I had planned on picking Clara up at 3.30 and fixing dinner and neither of those happened. Instead we'll be eating at our favorite restaurant (El Dorado) and I'm going to get Clara the second I hit "submit". Well, after I put my shoes on.

I did go for a run around 2.30 though, knowing I likely wouldn't get it in this evening. I decided to go a different route to be able to run the greenbelt that is in the neighborhood next to ours. It was windy. If you are running against the wind, does that mean that you are actually running further? I swear that it seemed like I was being pushed back a couple of inches with every step I took.

Maybe I'm just making excuses and I was being lazy.

Needless to say, I WILL be ready for the 5K in a couple of weeks. I have run more than three miles at least once a week for the past four weeks, although my standard is still around 2.5. It's not to late to sponsor me!.
Halloween11/1/2008
Halloween in our neighborhood is out of control. We started off the evening at "Pumpkin Palooza" at the church and then sat in our driveway to watch the madness...

Because I had procrastinated and couldn't find a cute costume for Clara at the store, I made her a poodle skirt... Turned out to be a great idea, because we actually had to trick her in to wearing it - I know there is NO way we would have convinced her to wear anything more complicated than that!

Our next door neighbors have a huge haunted house and they all are involved... We could hear screams coming from next door all night long.

Another neighbor does crowd control... Helps thin out the crowds when it's getting to busy...

Pretty?10/31/2008
I know this is boring, but I do this for my own sake... I have a calendar to write everything down in that Clara does, but my brain doesn't work that way, so I use this... She's got some new words that she repeats and seems to know what mean (although she doesn't say them without prompting)...

pretty
peaches
breakfast
hungry
squirrel

And she still ends every word with a question mark. It cracks me up... "This one time? At band camp?"
I voted.10/29/2008
Have you?
Pumpkin Patch Photos10/28/2008
Saturday Clara and I went to the Pumpkin Patch with her Auntie Sarah and cousins. Of the ten-gazillion pictures we took, these are the best...

Our Monday Night10/28/2008
Last night after Clara's bath, she was sitting on Chris' lap reading books. Diaperless. You can guess what happened next. A little number one in the lap...

Chris put his pants in the laundry room after Clara peed (should there be 3 e's in that word? peeed? or peed?) on them. I threw them in the wash. This morning Chris couldn't find his wallet. Yeah, I don't check pockets, and he was in such a hurry to change out of the pee pants he forgot to get the wallet out. Oops. His wallet and everything in it were nice and clean this morning.

After we went to bed last night, the phone rang and the answering machine picked up. It was a collect call from Harris County Jail. If one of you needed me to bail you out last night, sorry. We were sleeping.
Ironic.10/24/2008
At 5, Chris called Comcast and cancelled our service - if they can't even set it up right, why would we want to use it.

At 5:09 the Comcast repair dude showed up. Nine minutes too late, buddy.
Are you kidding me?10/24/2008
In the past week I have wasted roughly 14 hours waiting on the cable internet guys to come to our house.

Last Friday, they were scheduled to come betwen 12 and 5, and showed up around 4.30. Really, that's pretty good. I was annoyed then because I like to get Clara early on Fridays, and she wound up having to stay past 5. Well, it turns out the guy set us up for the wrong thing (how does that even happen), so we called, complained and had a new appointment for Wednesday between 12 and 5.

4:45pm Wedneday, I'm tired of waiting so I put a note on the door saying I'll be right back and went to get Clara. Around 6pm, Chris calls to find out if/when they're coming and they say "oh, we couldn't make it today, can we reschedule for Friday?" So guess what, we made an "appointment" for Friday (today) between 12 and 5.

It's 4:22pm. Fortunately Clara spent the day with her Mimi, so she doesn't have to stay late at day care again. But I've been waiting since noon. Today I was hoping to run, take a shower and go to the grocery store after I got my work stuff done, so around 2 Chris called to find out the status... "Oh, he's right around the corner finishing up a job - you're next so he should be there soon". So I didn't go the grocery store, I didn't go on a run, and my hair has definitely seen better days.

So, I'm going to take a shower because I'm supposed to meet Chris, Clara and his parents for dinner in an hour (which means I need to leave here in about 30 minutes). I can guarantee you the second I turn the water on, the door bell will ring. Either that or they won't show at all.

Blech.
Clear Lake Celtic Music Festival10/22/2008
My niece is so cool... She has been learning to River Dance. And she's only five (almost).

The school she goes to learn to River Dance (official name: Irish Dance) danced at the Clear Lake Celtic Music Festival this past weekend, where my brother-in-law was playing with his band. We've been several times, but the only time Clara has gone was when she was in my belly, so I decided to take her.

Becca did good.

Followed a few days later by a morning miracle!10/22/2008
Last night we tried again to put Clara down without nursing. Chris read her books and I left the room and she went to sleep without a noise.

And she didn't make a peep until 5 o'clock this morning. That's the first time she's slept through the night in I don't know how long. I don't know if it's that that molar finally broke through or what, but I'm hoping it happens again tonight!

Speaking of morning miracles, she said two new words yesterday: hungry and reakfast. They didn't sound anything like that, but seeing (hearing?) as she was repeating me and pointing to the kitchen, I think she knew what she was saying!
